Your piano keeps going out of tune, especially in winter? That is rarely the instrument's fault – usually the room climate is to blame. Here is how to protect your piano.
Why the tuning changes with the seasons
The heart of every piano is its wooden soundboard. Wood absorbs and releases moisture – it works. When humidity rises the soundboard expands; when it falls, it contracts. String tension changes with it – and your piano drifts out of tune.
That is why many pianos suddenly sound different in spring and autumn when the indoor climate shifts. It is entirely normal and no cause for alarm.
The ideal conditions for your piano
A piano feels most at home at around 18–22 °C and a relative humidity of 45–60 %. What matters is less the exact figure than the consistency: strong swings stress the instrument most.
Heating air in winter – the greatest danger
In winter, humidity in heated rooms often falls far below the ideal range. Dry air makes the soundboard shrink – in the worst case cracks and loose tuning pins follow. A room humidifier or a Dampp-Chaser system fitted inside the instrument provides relief.
Where your piano should not stand: against an outside wall, next to or above a radiator, in direct sun or right by a window. A calm spot on an inner wall is ideal.

Why does my piano go out of tune every winter?
Because heating air sharply lowers room humidity. The soundboard dries, contracts and changes the string tension. More stable humidity noticeably reduces the effect.
What is a Dampp-Chaser system?
A climate system fitted inside the piano that keeps humidity even – humidifying when the air is dry, dehumidifying when it is damp. I will advise you whether it is worthwhile for your instrument and install it properly.
How often should I tune with a fluctuating climate?
Twice a year – ideally in spring and autumn when the indoor climate changes. That keeps your piano sounding its best all year round.
